Triple Threat. Tri-Power, All Paper, All Numbers Match!
1969 was a very long production year for Chevrolet because of a worker’s strike. Due to the strike, Chevrolet made Corvettes that year all the way up until Dec 1969 and they produced 38,762 of them. If you were wealthy enough and free enough in 1969 to order a brand new Corvette for your next car, it came with the base 350 CI/300 HP small-block engine. However, there were many engine choices all the way up to the barely streetable 427/430 HP L88/ZL1 or the 427/435 HP Tri-Power engines. If you wanted the thrill of three Holley two-barrel carburetors opening every time you mashed the pedal, but didn’t want the annoyance of solid valve lifters and continuous valve-lash adjustments, you checked off the L68 block on your order form and got 400 HP of Tri-Power carbureted 427 CI Chevy big-block power. What many people fail to realize is that except for the ridiculously rare ZL1 aluminum block 427 (2 made) and the also incredibly rare 427 L88 (188 made) the Tri-Power 427/400 HP engine is the rarest drivetrain of all. Only 2,072 people of the 38,762 had the fortitude to order the brutal L68 427CI Tri-Power drivetrain. This car is one of those 2,072 and it retains its matching numbers engine, transmission and rear axle—Very rare and very special indeed. The vehicle was sold originally to a Mr. Stanford of PA on Aug, 16th, 1969 and the odometer currently registers 16,598 miles (unknown if original).
In addition to its completely “Born With” drivetrain, this brilliant, eye-popping, code 984 Daytona Yellow/trim ZQ4 black vinyl interior Tri-Power Corvette is documented with more original factory paperwork than I’ve ever seen on one car. Original Tank Sticker, Window Invoice, Protect-O-Plate, Warranty Book, Owner’s Manual and sleeve, Trim Ring instruction sleeve, Radio Instruction card, Ignition Lock System instruction card, Chevy Postcard, Headlamp Washer instruction card and dozens of “frame-off” restoration pics!
In addition to its very rare and original 427/400 Tri-Power drivetrain, this investment-quality Corvette was also optioned very well. Directly from the original window invoice and tank sticker, this Corvette was ordered with Soft-Ray Tinted Glass, 3.70 geared Posi-Traction rear axle, Power Brakes, Transistor Ignition, 4-speed Close-Ratio Muncie manual transmission, Power Steering, Head Rests, Red Stripe tires, front Fender Louvers and AM/FM Stereo radio.
Although this is a beautiful show car, this car is not a trailer queen. It runs and drives excellent and is very powerful and solid mechanically. It would be as home on the street heading for your weekend car show or winding down a fall-foliaged back road as it would be sitting still, increasing in value in your storage facility.
Do not under estimate the value of this car’s rare, numbers matching drivetrain or its very valuable complete portfolio of original documentation. This car will appreciate well in the future.
