In 1970, you could have had your Chevelle SS in a number of configurations. The base Chevelle SS came with the 396 CI/325 HP engine and was quite a tire burner with the gobs of torque it produced. If you wanted something more beastly than that, you checked off the LS5 engine option on your order sheet and you got the tire-shredding 454CI/360HP engine with 500 lbs ft of torque. This engine was enough to push the Chevelle SS 0-60 mph in 6.0 seconds and through the quarter mile in 14.2 seconds at 100 mph. Of the 62,373 1970 Chevelle SS’ produced, only 4,298 were equipped with the LS5 454 engine. Contrary to popular opinion, this makes it even more rare than the fabled LS6 450 HP 454 of the same year (4,475 built).
The nearly completely re-styled 1970 Chevelle SS quickly became what most would call the most popular and best looking of all Chevelles to that point and it remains so with collectors today. Certain exterior colors enhance what is already a beautiful body style and this car’s rare and highly desirable Code 19 Tuxedo Black does that in spades.
The 1970 Chevelle SS 454 LS5 you see here is beautifully restored in its original colors and to its original configuration (Cowl hood added). The engine is freshly rebuilt to mostly stock specifications and produced 427 HP and 525 lbs ft of torque on the dyno thanks to modern engine building tolerances and expertise.
Numbers matching 454 CI LS5 engine rated at 360 HP and 500 lbs ft torque, original and rare M-22 “Rock Crusher” heavy-duty Muncie 4-speed transmission and correct 3.31 geared, 12-Bolt positraction axle. Rare Tuxedo Black (Code 19) exterior with white stripes and black vinyl bench interior. Optioned with F41 suspension, power disc brakes, power steering, tinted glass and AM radio w/rr spkr. Cowl Induction hood added.
This stunning, collector-quality Chevelle SS 454 is documented with 2 build sheets, the original cowl tag and the original engine deck stamp with matching VIN. This vehicle also has its original frame with the identification clearly stamped in the rear, driver side portion of the frame rail. Lastly, the vehicle comes with its original owner’s manual and jacket (stamped with original selling dealership’s name and address) and the engine dyno power production sheet.
