1967 Shelby GT500

There were only 2410 Shelby GT500s produced in 1967.  Carroll Shelby started out with a high-performance, S-Code (390/320 HP) fastback Mustang and turned it into his own brand of balanced driving machine.  He chunked the 390 engine and replaced it with a 428/355 HP, 420 Lbs ft torque (underrated) cubic inch “Police Interceptor” (PI) engine which utilized 10.1 compression ratio pistons, the PI camshaft and a medium-rise aluminum intake manifold topped off with dual 600 cfm Holley four barrels straight off the legendary 427 Side Oiler engine.  He used the nearly bullet proof 31-spline Toploader (if a four speed) and a just as bullet proof 9” Ford rear end.  On the body of the car, he utilized a variety of weight-saving and air-directing fiberglass body components (side scoops, trunk lid, hood, front fascia, rear spoiler) and those famous Mercury Cougar-sourced rear tail lights.  Inside the car, Carroll Shelby specified “Deluxe” interior trim from Ford and then swapped in his own, 1-year only Swiss made wood and stainless steel steering wheel, added the Rally Pac-style gauge cluster and welded in the integral roll bar with inertia-reel shoulder belts patterned after those found in the F-4 Phantom fighter aircraft.  For the suspension of his GT500s, he added heavy duty Gabriel shocks (Konis optional this year), specified 15” wheels, used a thicker front sway bar and his own “progressive rate” coil springs.

This beautiful, freshly restored Red 67 Shelby GT500 is equipped with its date- and model-correct, Shelby-massaged 428/355 HP, 10.1 compression, twin Holley carbureted PI engine, correct RUG-S Toploader 4-speed transmission, and correct 9” Ford rear-axle housing with 3.50 gearing and dealer-added Detroit Locker assembly.  Its Red exterior is flawless and has had hundreds of hours spent making every metal and fiberglass panel seam even and tight.  You will look a long way to find another Shelby with panel fit this well done.  This Shelby GT500 came equipped from Shelby American with the highly desirable Inboard Headlights.  The exterior is augmented with full, white “Le Mans” racing stripes and optional 10-spoke Aluminum wheels.  The interior is just as fresh as the exterior and done in the vehicle’s original “Deluxe” black vinyl.  This Shelby GT500 was also optioned with the AM radio.  Period correct Koni “Red” shocks were utilized (an option from Shelby in 1967) instead of the heavy-duty Gabriels.

After completion by Shelby American on 25 May 1967, this GT500 was shipped to Jack Loftus Ford in Hinsdale, IL.  Jack Loftus Ford sold the vehicle to its original owner on 11 Aug 67, who took it home to Moline, IL.

This fresh Shelby GT500 is well documented.  The original Shelby Chassis number still resides on the passenger’s side fender apron sheet metal and this is Shelby chassis number 67400F9A02110.  This Shelby GT500 is in the Shelby Registry and comes with its Shelby production order, Shelby Registry entry and report, Shelby American invoice and a parts sales order from Loftus Ford to Shelby specifying additional hood click pins and a steering wheel.

In addition to the above Shelby American documentation, the restoration of this car was meticulously documented with hundreds of restoration pics.
