In the late 1960s, Ford was playing catch up with Chevy and AMC in the Trans Am racing series. Early attempts to compete against Chevy and AMC with a “Tunnel Port” 302 engine had not gone well and it was time to even the score. Ford engineers came up with a their 302 engine mated to a set of very 351 Cleveland-like cylinder heads and the “Boss 302” engine was born. Using the “race today, sell tomorrow” mentality of the day, Ford made the very special “Boss 302” package available to consumers and a legend was born.
According to information from the Marti Report, Ford produced 7,014 Boss 302 Mustangs in 1970. But the story on this particular Boss 302 Mustang doesn’t end there. Of those 7,014 Boss 302s, only 241 were painted in the spectacular “Grabber Green” you see here. Furthermore, only 55 were ordered with the 3.91 rear gear and Traction-Lok axle. Lastly, this car was ordered with almost no other options, making this Boss 302 Mustang 1-of-1 with equipment ordered. The original intent was obviously to keep the car light and just go fast, but 40 years later this combination of equipment produces one very rare car indeed.
Original, matching numbers Boss 302 engine, Close-Ratio Toploader transmission and Traction-Lok, 3.91 geared rear axle. Spectacularly re-applied, very rare “Grabber Green” exterior finish with Boss 302 striping over all original sheet metal and added chrome Magnum 500 wheels. Standard black bucket seat interior with A/M radio and original Hurst T-Handle shifter. Optioned only with the rare Traction-Lok 3.91 axle, tinted windows all around and AM radio.
Concours-level detailing can be seen in the engine compartment and in the paintwork on this car. The vehicle is documented with all matching numbers, a Marti Report, the original invoice showing initial sale at Goad Motors Ford in Junction City, Kansas and an appraisal from the Boss Exchange in late 2007 with value set at $95,000.
