340 Six Barrel, TX9 “Black Velvet” Exterior
4-Speed Manual Transmission
1-of-21 Known to Exist
The car you see advertised here is one of 2,724 1970 AAR ‘Cudas built in 1970. Of course, this is not just any 70 AAR ‘Cuda. This is one of only 21 known-to-exist TX9 “Black Velvet” AAR ‘Cudas. Of those 21, some are known crushed/destroyed and probably a full 50% are automatic cars. I estimate this is one of less than 10 Black-Velvet 4-speed manual transmission 70 AAR ‘Cudas left in the world. Exceedingly rare, exceedingly valuable and sure to become more valuable in the future. In addition, this car has its Broadcast sheet and original owners’ manual, ownership history back to the original owner and only 25,000 original miles, making it most likely the lowest mile TX9 Black, 4-speed AAR Cuda in existence.
In 1970, Plymouth/Dodge entered the Trans-Am road racing series with their brand new E-Body cars, the Cuda and Challenger. In order to do so, they were required to homologate the over-2 litre cars with at least 2,500 street production units and the AAR Cuda was born. Plymouth produced all the AAR ‘Cudas in only five weeks, from 10 Mar to 17 Apr 70. They produced a total of only 2,724 AAR 'Cudas and they gave them only one engine choice, the now legendary 340 CI 6-Barrel carbureted V8.
For those lucky enough to lock up an order for one of these AAR ‘Cudas in 1970, here’s what you got: The Trans Am package consisted of the special stress-relieved 340 “T/A” engine block with extra material added in the main bearing area, a high-rise aluminum Edelbrock intake manifold with 3 Holley 2-barrel carburetors and specially cast cylinder heads with extra material for porting and off-set pushrods. A “fresh-air” package, front power disc brakes with special 11” rear drums, 4-speed manual trans, a 3.55-geared Sure-Grip Heavy-Duty rear axle, left-hand outside remote mirror, a special “AAR only” fiberglass fresh air hood with hood pins, a duck tail rear spoiler, side-exit exhaust, 7-blade torque drive fan, the big 26” radiator, right hand rear quarter mounted radio antenna, a “Rallye” suspension, front and rear sway bars, manual steering, 15X7 Rallye wheels with polished trim rings, E60 15 front and G60 rear Goodyear raised white-letter Polyglass GT tires, a space-saver 14” spare tire and the famous “Trans-Am” horizontal stripe.
1-of-21 TX9 Black Velvet AAR ‘Cudas known to exist and probably 1-of-less-than 10 4-speed manual AAR ‘Cudas in the world. 340 Six Barrel/290HP CE engine, 4-speed A833 manual transmission with original Pistol-Grip shifter and 3.55 geared “Sure-Grip” rear axle. Documented with the original Broadcast Sheet, both original fender tags and matching VIN number stamps in the radiator support and cowl. 2-owner car with 25,000 original miles (all ownership history known). TX9 “Black Velvet” exterior with High-Grade black, bucket seat interior. Optioned with Ralley Dash, console and all-tinted glass.
From the original Fender Tag, this black AAR ‘Cuda decodes as follows:
